Ask An Expert: Spring 2014 Makeup Trends

Since winter has been rearing it’s ugly little head, I needed some inspiration.  So, I made my way to the Bloomies cosmetic counter at 900 North Michigan to visit my favorite make up artist, Dani, for a spring makeup consultation.

Check out what Dani has to say about spring makeup trends and my consultation:

During Keli’s makeup consultation appointment, I focused a lot on color selections and what’s on trend right now. This upcoming season is all about beautiful hydrated and dewy skin. I chose Mineralize Moisture Foundation, because it’s a sheer to medium coverage satin foundation that contains ingredients like shea butter and Vitamin E, which helps hydrate, soothe, and soften the skin.

Instead of bronzing this season we are focusing on adding pops of pink and peach blush. So, I chose one of my favorite blushes called Peaches and I highlighted the tops of her cheekbones and down the center of her nose with Shell Cream Color Base.

If you have oily skin or combination skin, it is important that you mattify the oily parts of your skin, like the t-zone with a translucent powder. A translucent powder like Prep and Prime Skin is finely milled and made of corn starch, so it doesn’t add much texture to the skin. The skin still looks light and fresh and not as heavy as talc powders can make the skin look.

For her lips we went with a beautiful coral lip color and for her eyes we used a combination of violet and soft purple eyeshadow and pigment.

If I may interject…If you were wondering why Dani would use colors in the orange and purple family together; here’s why?  It goes right back to our trusty color wheel.  The colors orange and purple are located opposite each other; equal distance from the color red.  Red also, is one of the colors used to create both orange and purple.  This means these colors compliment each other well.  Note:  Any color equal distance from each other and created using the same color; have a great visual relationship!

Okay, back to the regularly schedule program…

Makeup artist Lyne Desnoyers commented that “This season is about tweaking and revealing beauty, not reinventing it.” That’s exactly what I did with Keli. I enhanced what was already there instead of altering her face with heavy contouring or bronzing, like we often see on Instagram or on reality tv.

This season we are back to our authentic selves, only it’s a little more polished.
